Patience, Fortitude and a free reading room
The two marble lions on the steps of the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building were named Patience and Fortitude during the Great Depression, and they still guard one of the few grand reading rooms in the world that anyone can walk into without paying. The Rose Main Reading Room runs almost the length of a city block under a painted ceiling, and the research collections behind it are among the largest held by any public library.
Street level, the city keeps the same habit. The Brooklyn Book Festival is free to attend and turns downtown Brooklyn over to authors, small presses and translators for a weekend each autumn, while the Strand has been selling new, used and rare books off Broadway since 1927. Our New York listeners tend to arrive in the BookNest room straight from one of the three.
