Sao Paulo dispatch

Half a million readers under one roof

The Bienal do Livro Sao Paulo is one of the largest book fairs in Latin America, drawing hundreds of thousands of readers to Sao Paulo Expo, with an audience that skews young enough to make publishers rethink their lists every edition. It is less a trade show than a civic event.

The rest of the year, Livraria da Vila's bookshops keep the readings, launches and children's programming going, and Companhia das Letras, founded in 1986, publishes much of the contemporary Brazilian literary list our Sao Paulo listeners are working through.
