The oldest library in Australia
The State Library of New South Wales traces back to 1826, when it began as the Australian Subscription Library, making it the oldest library in the country. Its Mitchell collection of Australian and Pacific history sits behind sandstone on Macquarie Street and is open to readers for free.
Every May the Sydney Writers' Festival brings Australian and international writers to stages around the harbour, and Gleebooks in Glebe, trading since 1975, runs one of the busiest independent author programmes in Australia. Sydney is our furthest desk by clock and often the first one awake.
